Lubricant helps reduce friction between a bearing’s moving surfaces. More is not automatically better: excess or unsuitable lubricant can attract dirt or change how the bearing feels.
Use a product intended for bearings
Clean and dry the bearing before lubricating it. Use a lubricant compatible with the bearing and follow the amount and application instructions on its label. Apply carefully, then rotate the bearing gently so the lubricant can spread. Do not mix products unless their manufacturers say they are compatible.
Check the result
Reinstall the bearing and wheel correctly, then check that the wheel turns freely. If the bearing remains rough, noisy or binding, adding more lubricant is unlikely to fix the underlying issue. Inspect for dirt, damage, corrosion or installation problems, and replace a bearing that is no longer safe to use.
