Clean skateboard bearings when dirt or rough running makes care worthwhile, not simply because a calendar says it is time. Cleaning can help a healthy bearing, but it cannot repair corrosion, damaged parts or wear.
Clean with care
- Remove the wheel and bearing using a suitable tool. Keep small parts together.
- Wipe away loose dirt from the bearing exterior.
- Use a cleaner intended for the bearing materials and follow its label. Work in a ventilated area and follow the product’s handling and disposal instructions.
- Do not soak rubber shields or use solvents on them unless the bearing or cleaner instructions say it is safe.
- Let the bearing dry fully before adding a compatible lubricant and reinstalling it.
Know when to stop
If a bearing remains rough, sticks, has visible damage or shows significant rust after cleaning, replacement may be the safer option. Do not ride a damaged bearing. Follow DSCO product instructions where supplied, and check the cleaner and lubricant labels for compatibility.
See the DSCO care guide and Lightning Lube’s product instructions. Keep cleaning products away from children and never ingest them.
